Choices at the Smorgasbord
You stand at a smorgasbord of delectables. On your plate you already have a one inch thick filet mignon, spiced shrimp and caviar. Just out of reach at the far end of the table is lobster tail and Oysters Rockefeller. But to the left of the table in the corner, behind a potted ficus, is a picnic basket and cooler.
Does it make sense to put down your plate, reach behind the ficus and pull out a Bud Lite and a ham and cheese on rye?
Yet that seems to be what Dan Snyder is ready to do. With a stable of high talented coaches already under contract and at his beck and call, with a succession order already pre-determined by his hero Joe Gibbs, with a successful defense and budding offense established and ingrained in a talented crew of players, why would Snyder abandon this plate brimming with delightful victuals and go for the mundane?
Jim Fassel is a fairly good coach. In the span of his professional head coaching career he has a nominally break-even track record. Although he lead his team to a Super Bowl appearance, it was an achievement fraught with much angst and near disaster. Ultimately, his habit of hyping his players' emotions became too much for them to cope with constantly and he lost their confidence. In seven seasons in New York he had three losing seasons finishing 4-12 before being fired. His college head coaching career was less distinguished compiling an overall record of 25-33 in five years at Utah.
We're definitely talking tuna on whole wheat with a shmear of mayo here.
And The Daniel is not a tuna kind of guy. He's more your Prawns Flambe type, complete with table-side preparation and spotlights.
But the whole process (more like a truck careening downhill with its brake-lines cut) has now come to a screaming halt as The Redskins Express slammed into a brick wall. In his haste to assemble an Instant Coaching Staff with Fassel as the crown jewel (read that: lump of coal) surrounded by a crew of familiars (Zorn and Ryan are old associates) Snyder forgot that not everybody sits up and begs pretty when he waves his money treats under their noses. Sometimes they actually want to work where they are happy, empowered, respected and feel that they have a strong chance to be successful. He got told: "NO".
You have to hand it to The Man, though. Given a major disappointment (how many people have told him "No" in such rapid succession in his life?) he has now decided to make lemonade out of these lemons. With his impetuous shopping thirst slaked temporarily by his failed pursuit of Coaching Staff Du Jour, he has now gazed around the room and re-discovered the smorgasbord table. Why, with just a little patience and effort he could have a shot at the Pheasant Under Glass on the far side of the table. Put in football terms, if Snyder waits until after the Super Bowl he gets a shot at Spagnuola and McDaniels, the two hottest coordinators on the market who are being touted as the next great head coach candidates.
Now that's more to My Man Dan's fois gras taste.
Meanwhile, the entire coaching staff is left in the dark, slowly twisting in the wind like a Nixon Plumber. Snyder's relationship is so broken with them that he had Gibbs call them to let them know that a staff meeting would be held in a few days to discuss their "interim" duties. Gibbs is loyal and true to his people. You can imagine that his heart is breaking as he not only has to watch them go through this torture of not knowing what will happen to them and all of their hard work, but also has to participate in the process and look them in the eye while his legacy crumbles around their feet.
Stay tuned for the next episode of "As Your Stomach Churns and Your Team Burns".
Could someone pass the Rolaids? I don't feel so good.

Well done. I wonder if He will surprise us all in the end, and do the right thing.
That wouldn’t be a surprise.
That would be a miracle.
As usual, a well written expos’e. I must believe the
” dan” does not read these things or considers himself and the rest of us, inconsequential. That must include the players, coaches, etc, down to the attendants at Fed-X field. He could correct all this, and thus reclaim most of us by being forthright. Why this delay? Why not Williams? I would assume their must be a reason ( I PRAY ) why we are looking at other known loosers ( If they were not they would be coaching ) to come in to help.
Thanks Rick, for a well written piece..
