Kendall on guard for Redskins

by archivedposts on August 23, 2007

The Redskins' old guard coaches must not have liked what they saw in Todd Wade and Mike Pucillo. They went to an old trading partner for another Jetskin. Offensive guard Pete Kendall (6-5, 292) will join the Redskins. The team traded a conditional draft choice to the New York Jets for the disgruntled lineman today according to stories by the Associated Press and on redskins.com. Kendall must still pass a physical. He will be paid $2.7 million salary, will the Jets will get Washington's a fifth-round pick in 2008 or a fourth-rounder in 2009.
"There is still a lot there that needs to be done," [coach Joe] Gibbs said. "But we're always looking for somebody who we think could add to the team and fit in with us."
The Redskins touted OT Todd Wade as the replacement for departed OG Derrick Dockery. Wade's transition from tackle to guard was interrupted by a shoulder injury. The Skins turned to Mike Pucillo, a back-up center and guard who appeared in eleven games last season as an extra blocker in certain schemes. Pucillo received generally good marks for his efforts, but he and rookie tackle Stephen Heyer missed a block on Steelers defensive end Brett Keisel who had a free shot at quarterback Jason Campbell. Keisel's low blow on Campbell gave the Redskins a scare. Campbell suffered a bruised knee, but it was the type hit that could have resulted in a more serious tendon injury. Of equal concern was word that the Steelers were targeting the left side of the Redskins O-line, especially the guard position. Kendall has 156 starts in twelve seasons. He spent the last three years with the Jets and was with Seattle and Arizona. Kendall felt that the Jets went back on their word to adjust his salary this season and made known his displeasure. However, he did not sit out training camp. The move is vintage Redskins in the Snyder era. Kendall is an experienced veteran player over age 30 who will get a pay increase with the Skins. He is a quick fix who could step in at guard immediately. He will join other linemen in the thirty-something bracket. The day is coming when the team will have to replace the entire offensive line in one swoop. In recent days, the Skins added veteran WR Todd Pinkston (30) and ex-Chargers LB Randall Godfrey (34). For the most part, the Skins avoided similar moves this offseason. The Redskins felt forced into this move. The coach-in-chief's objective was to hoard the team's 2008 draft choices, which was a successful effort up to now. Adding Kendall is a solid move. I would not play Campbell this week against the Ravens after what I saw last week unless he is truly 100% which I doubt is this case. Too much downside.

Win-Win Situation for both teams it appears…
Skins: Kendall is pretty solid when he isnt disgruntled or playing center. Leader with good pass blocking, not very stout at the run but makes up with his knowledge.
Jets: Unload a player who has been clearly upset since early summer, 34 years old and wanting a pay raise, and rob the Skins blind of a 4th round pick. No offense, but that was highway robbery, just like the Thomas Jones swap of 2nd rounders in April.
good luck to Kendall, although not too much since we play the skins this season
